A clinic at the current location was established as a family medical practice in the 1960's by Doctors Allan Trinca and Robert Gardiner. Upon their retirement, Doctor Phillip Liefman (who attended the practice as a child) was asked to take over. He has run the clinic since 1987, assisted by his wife Jillian, the practice nurse.
With many years as an assistant surgeon (previously Orthopaedic, General Surgery, Breast Cancer, Plastics, currently Neurosurgery) Doctor Liefman developed a growing interest in skin cancer. Returning to medical school, he completed a Master of Medicine Degree in Skin Cancer in 2008.
In 2009, the Bayside Skin Cancer Clinic, which had operated in Mentone since 2004, was scheduled for closure by its owner - Healthscope. Instead, Doctor Liefman took over the running of the clinic and amalgamated it into the Beaumaris rooms.
Bayside Skin Cancer and Medical Clinic was born!
In 2016, a major renovation and refurbishment of the rooms was undertaken, resulting in stunning new premises and additional space. This has enabled the talented team of doctors to be expanded, to include more doctors with relevant experience and a passion for the detection, treatment, prevention and care of skin cancer.
Bayside Skin Cancer and Medical Clinic has invested in the latest technology in imaging and other equipment to provide the highest level of service in the early detection and treatment of skin cancer through a highly regarded preventive care program.
Dr Phillip Liefman obtained his medical degree at Monash University in 1980. He took over his old GP's practice on Balcombe Road in 1987, from where he has been practicing general medicine.
With many years of experience as an assistant surgeon in the fields of orthopaedics, general surgery, breast cancer, plastics and currently neurosurgery, he developed a growing interest in skin cancer. Dr Liefman returned to medical school and graduated with a Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer), he also holds a Certificate of Advanced Dermoscopy. Dr Liefman is an assistant neurosurgeon at Epworth Hospital in Richmond.
He is a member of both the Skin Cancer College of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. His other special interests include anti-ageing medicine, fitness, travelling and his family.
Dr Robert Cai graduated from Beijing University in 1985 and began practicing medicine in Australia in 1988. He is interested in all aspects of general practice medicine.
Jillian completed her general nursing in Ballarat in 1985. She spent the next two years travelling and working overseas (England and India). In 1994, she completed a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Deakin University in Geelong. Jillian joined her husband, Dr Liefman in the clinic as the practice nurse in 2001.
Dr Simon Shirzad is a specialist General Practitioner and Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General practice (FRACGP). He has a special interest in skin and skin cancer medicine. He has worked with the dermatology department at Monash Health as well as working as a Clinical Fellow at the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital. He is currently completing further qualifications in skin cancer medicine. He will be working at Bayside Skin Cancer and Medical Clinic on Wednesdays.
Dr Kratochvil is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, with a special interest in skin cancer medicine. Since completing her medical degree in 2008, she has worked extensively within the hospital system as a general surgical and plastic surgical registrar, gaining invaluable surgical experience. When she is not working as a skin cancer doctor, she works alongside multiple plastic surgeons as an assistant surgeon, as well as practising cosmetic medicine. In her spare time she enjoys being outdoors with her husband and two young children.
Dr Guan Ye (She/her) graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2013. Dr Ye worked in regional Victoria and Queensland before completing her GP Specialist training in Melbourne. She enjoys all aspects of general practice.
She grew up and lives in Bayside and is married with two children. While not at work, She enjoys listening to vinyl records, volunteering at dog rescue and hiking with family.
